Forty battery-electric bin lorries will join Amsterdam’s waste fleet in 2026, using depot charging and LFP battery packs covered by an eight-year warranty.
The 40 battery-electric DAF XD 6x2 FAN waste lorries cover three body types for municipal operations: 13 rear-end loaders, 10 crane and hook-lift vehicles, and 17 front loaders for container collections.
DAF positions the XD Electric as “bodybuilder-friendly”. From the factory, battery packs can be mounted in multiple chassis positions, avoiding relocation of high-voltage components and preserving space for equipment such as stabiliser legs. DAF says this layout can reduce integration time and cost for bodybuilders.
Each truck is fitted with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries: three 105 kWh packs (315 kWh total) as standard, with provision for up to five. The electric motor is rated at either 170 kW or 220 kW, and a 90 kW ePTO powers the bodywork and cranes. DAF says the LFP packs are cobalt- and nickel-free and can be repeatedly charged to 100%; the battery warranty is eight years.
Charging will be at depots, and vehicles will enter service once those facilities are installed in 2026. On range, DAF says performance is duty-dependent: Amsterdam has set operational requirements by body type, including numbers of collections, stops and payloads. And because the superstructures draw power from the same battery packs, no single range figure applies across the fleet.
Cab features are oriented to city work and frequent on/off movements during rounds. The XD Electric includes a large windscreen, low belt line and the standard DAF Corner View camera on the passenger side to aid visibility of vulnerable road users, plus a two-step low entry and seating for up to three.
The municipality frames the purchase as part of its strategy to cut emissions from city operations.
“The 40 DAF XD Electric trucks will not only help Amsterdam reduce its own CO2 footprint but also contribute to improving air quality in the Dutch capital,” said Roland Heijnen, director of waste and resources for the municipality of Amsterdam. “We are pleased with the cooperation with DAF dealer Truckland and have full confidence in a sustainable future with these electric waste trucks in Amsterdam.”
According to DAF, the mix of front, rear and crane-equipped hook-lift variants will enable the city to collect almost all types of household and office waste emission-free once the trucks are in service.
