Electric van registrations increased by 25.9% in August and market share hit a record 16.3% according to SMMT figures, however it cautioned that seasonally low overall volumes could exaggerate percentage changes.

There were 2,395 registrations of BEVs up to 4.25-tonne, compared to 1,902 in August 2025.

As a result, year-to-date registrations of electric vans stands at 22,527, a 26.2% increase on the same period last year.

The SMMT described it as a strong performance, but added that the month’s typically low overall volumes can distort shifts in percentages.

It added that the results remained significantly adrift of mandated targets and blamed higher upfront purchase costs, insufficient charging provisions and wider operating pressures for holding back demand.

The SMMT said an announcement by the government to review the mandate was therefore timely.

Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said, “August’s traditionally low volumes often lead to market volatility – and while a record market share for electric vans should rightly be celebrated, September will show the reality of the transition as the new numberplate drives greater volume.

“With EV demand remaining drastically adrift of mandate targets, government’s decision to bring forward its review is essential, and meaningful change will be required to sustain a market that keeps the economy moving.

“Reforming the regulation to align with market conditions will drive investment, protect the UK’s competitiveness and deliver a transition that benefits everyone,” he added.
