The Energy Networks Association (ENA) has directed transport operators, who want to install or upgrade electricity grid connections to electrify their fleets, to an upgraded Transport Connections Guidance tool available via the ENA website.
The dedicated transport guidance is part of a connections dashboard regularly backed up with data from the National Energy System Operator (NESO) and the transmission and distribution networks about available capacity.
The free interactive tool is intended to help heavy freight transport organisations plan electricity connections for new or expanding electric assets. It sets out the information needed before making a connection application and signposts useful tools and resources.
The tool includes a glossary to help cut through industry jargon and an expanded ‘frequently asked questions’ section. Users can enter information about their organisation and electricity use to calculate what is needed to electrify transport assets. The details will be recorded by the tool and can be presented in a downloadable report.
The website explains the difference between the transmission and distribution network operators and independent networks. It explores options like changing the chargers’ location in a large site, to access a cheaper or less constrained substation or using a so-called ‘smart charging’ or flexible connection – effectively a shared approach, which may allow faster connection if power is not required at all times.
