CEVA Logistics is launching a recycling service for end-of life-electric vehicle batteries, which will see it open 15 battery logistics centres across Europe, starting with the UK, France and Spain this year.
The multi-million investment follows a trial of a battery logistics centre, which was launched by Ceva Logistics in 2022 at its hub in Ghislenghien, Belgium.
Now CEVA is aiming to become a pioneer in the reverse logistics of used electric vehicle batteries, expanding its battery logistics centres across 10 European countries by 2027.
The service, which is targeted at manufacturers, will offer a scalable solution complying with strict regulatory requirements for battery processing.
It aims to meet growing market demand, with around eight million lithium-ion batteries due to reach their end-of-life in Europe over the next five years. It will also help limit pressure on the use of rare metals and preserve natural resources
Each battery logistics centre will be located within designated areas of CEVA’s FVL platforms.
Centres will include specialised storage zones and secure containment units, installed in temperature-controlled containers equipped with racks, temperature and humidity monitoring equipment and 24/7 alarm systems.
The dedicated workshops will carry out battery diagnostics, deep discharge, dismantling and reconditioning operations.
CEVA will organise the collection of batteries from car dealerships, vehicle resellers and end-of-life vehicle centers. The service will then analyse the status of the batteries to determine whether they should be dismantled or reconditioned.
After temporary controlled storage, CEVA will then deliver the modules and waste to recycling centers or second-life facilities. The service will also offer battery collection and transport across Europe, as well as shipping to recyclers after processing.
In addition, CEVA will deploy value-added services including battery diagnosis, dismantling, regeneration or reconditioning to maximise value recovery, through reuse or recycling.
The solution will also offer traceability and data management with each battery tracked and monitored in real time throughout its journey, with enhanced traceability, to give full transparency of its status.
Mathieu Friedberg, CEVA Logistics chief executive, said: “The automotive industry is undergoing major changes with the rise of electric vehicles.
“Given the challenges of recycling and reusing batteries, it seemed essential to us, drawing on our logistics expertise, to propose robust and virtuous solutions to support the automotive sector in strengthening the circular economy.”
