Firms running battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have an opportunity to tell the government about the reality of operating the tech after the RHA launched a survey covering payload concerns.

It has published a follow-up initiative to its recent net zero survey, which further examines the challenges involved in running net zero fleet vehicles.

The group said it gave businesses a chance to help shape future rules that would guide the industry’s decarbonisation journey.

EV batteries are much heavier than diesel equivalents and so payload capacity is significantly less.

The RHA said this meant that for many companies, especially smaller firms with increasing cost considerations, it created operational and financial challenges.

RHA MD Richard Smith said: “We want to hear from operators across the country to ensure the government understands current BEV realities and practical barriers and to ensure regulations incentivise and support a fair and viable transition towards net zero.”

As well as providing insights for decision makers, the RHA said the results would also inform industry efforts to secure changes to vehicle weight and length regulations, and ensure switching to zero emission vehicles was viable for all businesses.
