The HVs HGV is a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) designed for regional operations. HVS is a new truck builder, based in Glasgow, Scotland and in the infancy of truck development. The first prototype vehicles have been unveiled in 2023, demonstrators will go on the road in 2025 and series production will follow. The company has yet to be type approved for sale and is going through homologation and certification.
Product Overview
The HVS HGV is a tractor unit with a 4x2 axle configuration, featuring rear-wheel drive. This design is specifically optimised to accommodate the storage of hydrogen and the associated componentry for a fuel cell vehicle. Notably, the HVS HGV offers an impressive range of up to 600 kilometres, providing ample mileage for regional transport operations.
Enhanced visibility is a notable feature of the HVS HGV. The vehicle incorporates an increased glazing area and low side door glass, resulting in over 15% additional direct vision compared to alternative vehicles. This improvement significantly enhances the driver's ability to observe vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians, prioritizing safety on the road.
The HVS HGV also benefits from an elongated and aerodynamic cab, taking advantage of newly introduced legislation that allows for longer truck cabs. This design offers several advantages, including improved aerodynamic performance, increased interior space, and enhanced safety measures. With a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of 19 tonnes in tractor unit form, the HVS HGV is well-suited for its intended applications. The Gross Combined Weight (GCW) of the vehicle ranges from 36 to 42 tonnes depending on semi-trailer configuration.
To facilitate manoeuvrability, the HVS HGV is equipped with advanced camera technology, ensuring better visibility and ease of operation. Additionally, the vehicle features wider doors, providing convenient access to the cab. Furthermore, the HVS HGV incorporates driver-oriented controls, including a digital display, easily accessible switchgear, and controls within reach of the driver's seat, promoting convenience and efficiency during operation.

Technical Briefing
The HVS HGV is a ground-up designed heavy goods vehicle that incorporates advanced fuel cell technology. The HVS HGV is purpose-built around a fuel cell powertrain, optimising the efficiency and performance of the entire vehicle.
The vehicle utilises gaseous hydrogen as fuel, which is compressed at up to 700 bar. This high-pressure compression allows for efficient storage and utilisation of hydrogen. The refuelling time for the HVS HGV is approximately 15-20 minutes, enabling quick turnaround times for continuous operation.
At the core of the HVS HGV's powertrain is a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell system. This fuel cell technology generates electricity without producing CO2 emissions, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable transportation solution. Additionally, the HVS HGV offers medium and heavy eAxle options, delivering impressive power of up to 450kW, further enhancing its performance capabilities.
To ensure reliable operation, the HVS HGV incorporates a high-power battery Energy Storage System (ESS). This system enables efficient charge and discharge capabilities, providing the necessary energy for the vehicle's powertrain.
With its ground-up design approach, fuel cell technology, powerful eAxle options, and advanced energy storage system, the HVS HGV represents a significant advancement in zero-emission heavy goods vehicles. By utilising hydrogen as fuel and incorporating cutting-edge systems, it aims to provide a sustainable and efficient transportation solution for a range of heavy-duty applications.
