An electric reefer that draws on multiple renewable energy sources and removes the need to rely on diesel, has been developed by TIP Group and two of its partners.

The Powered Trailer integrates battery, solar and energy recuperation to provide an emissions-free refrigerated transport solution that its designers claimed is both cost-effective and fully sustainable.

Developed in collaboration between TIP, SolarEdge e-Mobility and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Thermal Transport Europe GmbH, the trailer was recently showcased at the IAA Transportation exhibition in Hannover.

Its solar roof plays a primary role in supplying the energy, covering between 20% and 120% of the Mitsubishi all-electric cooling unit’s energy needs, depending on usage, outside temperatures and solar radiation.

The Powered Trailer’s energy recuperation axle captures kinetic energy and converts it into electricity for additional power when solar energy is insufficient.

TIP said this energy is stored in a high-capacity battery system, ensuring a reliable power source for the refrigeration unit.

“Our cooling units are designed with highly efficient inverter technology to ensure that no energy is wasted,” said Gunnar Hilge, head of development at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Thermal Transport.

“By integrating multiple power sources, we are creating a refrigeration solution that is both cost-effective and fully sustainable.”

The trailer is currently taking part in a pilot programme with logistics firm Zippel Group; Rogier Laan, TIP Group VP sales and marketing, added: “We aim to demonstrate that this configuration can function autonomously, ideally without relying on grid electricity.

“This trial will provide critical insights into system performance, energy savings, and operational efficiency, helping us refine the solution for broader market adoption.”
