Telecoms firm Openreach is optimising the UK’s second largest CV fleet through the expanded use of Google Cloud’s AI and data science tech.

It said that by leveraging Google’s Vertex AI and BigQuery, the company had implemented initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint of its 24,000-van fleet – and enable faster broadband installations for customers.

Its vehicles cover almost 200m miles a year and by migrating telematics data to Google Cloud it said this would boost sustainability and efficiency gains.

BigQuery’s geoanalytics had helped it identify where electric vans could replace diesel vehicles and accelerate Openreach’s transition; pinpoint the root causes of idling and excessive travel; and minimise vehicle off road time to ensure the right vehicles were available where they’re needed most.

“As the builder of the UK’s largest broadband network and operator of the country’s second largest commercial vehicle fleet, we take our responsibilities seriously,” said James Tappenden, MD, fibre first & shared services at Openreach.

“By applying Google Cloud’s technologies to real operational challenges, we’re seeing practical, measurable benefits – from connecting more families to gigabit broadband faster, to cutting vehicle emissions across our workforce.”
