XPO, Maritime Transport and Turners (Soham) are the fastest expanding of the major trucks fleets, according to Motor Transport’s Fleet Data listing.

Analysis of the fleet changes among the top ten players over the past six months show that XPO increased its truck fleet by 9.1% to 3,867, followed by Maritime Transport which is up 8.1% and Turners (Soham), up 2.5%.

The largest ten commercial vehicle operators now account for 19.9% of the 300,230 trucks and 32% of the 244,383 trailers covered by MT Fleet Data.

That compares to 19.2% of trucks and 30.3% of trailers when we launched MT Fleet Data in March, a change that reflects the fact that GXO’s acquisition of Wincanton was approved in June.

As a result of the Wincanton deal, GXO now runs as many trucks as DHL and Culina, second and third placed, combined.

Tesco, the only own-account operator in the Top 10 was also up slightly, while Evri also saw a small increase. The rest were all down fractionally.

It is worth noting that the top ten includes a number of parcel carriers whose business is seasonal, peaking around Christmas and consequently they would be expected to be down slightly over the summer.

The coming months will see further changes among the Top 10, notably as a result of the transfer of DHL eCommerce to Evri. This deal was approved by the Competition & Markets Authority and will result in the transfer of 849 trucks and 1,456 trailers from DHL to Evri.

It is also possible that CMA CGM’s impending purchase of Freightliner could propel it into the top ten. Adding Freightliner’s fleet to that of CMA CGM’s existing UK businesses, which include CEVA, gives a total of 2,246 trucks and 2,880 trailers.

Fleet Data is Motor Transport’s listing of the UK’s largest third party and own account HGV fleet operators. Based on the weekly O-licence updates issued by the Office of the Traffic Commissioners, Fleet Data enables subscribers to quickly identify operators in each of the eight traffic areas based on the number of vehicles on the licence and type of operator
