HGV charging specialist Voltempo has appointed Simon Smith as its new chief executive in a management shake-up which also sees the company’s founder Michael Boxwell take on the new role of corporate development officer and John Fox recruited as chief operating officer.

Announcing the appointment of Smith (pictured), the company said the new CEO will drive the next growth phase of the company and brings extensive private equity-backed and PLC experience in EV charging, energy strategy, and high-growth leadership.

Most recently, as an executive committee member at InstaVolt, the UK’s largest rapid EV charging network, Smith played a key role in its infrastructure roll out and commercial scale-up.

Voltempo added that Smith is also an EV sector thought leader and champions reforms that improve regulation, accelerate adoption and enhance customer experience.

Under the restructuring Boxwell, as corporate development officer, will oversee product innovation, strategic partnerships, and engagement with government stakeholders and transport ecosystem partners.

Joining Smith and Boxwell on Voltempo’s leadership team is John Fox, appointed as chief operating officer. Fox is a chartered engineer with over 20 years’ experience across mobility, energy and innovation.

He was previously chief technology officer at Indra Renewable Technologies. Fox has also held senior engineering roles at Rolls-Royce and GE Aviation. Voltempo said Fox brings extensive technical expertise and a strong track record of turning complex, advanced engineering concepts into scalable, real-world solutions.

Paul Jordan, chief commercial officer, and Benjamin Didier, chief financial officer, continue in their current roles.

Voltempo said Smith’s recruitment marks a “major phase” in Voltempo growth and in the rollout of the UK’s largest depot-based eHGV infrastructure network under the eFREIGHT 2030 project.

The management restructure follows the start of series production of Voltempo’s advanced Megawatt Charging System (MCS), the Voltempo HyperCharger, which the company said is a significant milestone in the UK’s transition to zero emission road freight.

Commenting on his appointment, Smith said: “Voltempo is entering an exciting and dynamic new phase.

“I’m looking forward to driving the next stage of growth and ensuring our technology is deployed in a way that meets the day-to-day realities of commercial vehicle operations.

“Our goal is clear: create robust, financeable infrastructure that improves efficiency for fleets and accelerates the transition to zero-emission HGVs across the UK.”

Boxwell commented: “Simon’s appointment marks a decisive moment for Voltempo.

“As we accelerate the rollout of the UK’s largest eHGV charging network through eFREIGHT 2030, his leadership and commercial experience will be instrumental in delivering our clean-tech solutions on a national and international scale.

“Together, with John, Paul and Benjamin, we have a leadership team in place ready to deliver the step change the industry has been waiting for.”
