Scania said it had agreed to buy bankrupt Northvolt’s battery division and it would be a partner to the truck maker’s business unit Power Solutions.
The acquisition of Northvolt Systems Industrial Division includes production capabilities, a research and development centre and a team of around 260 employees.
The operations are based in two locations: a leased production facility in Gdańsk, Poland, and an R&D centre in Tomteboda, Sweden.
Northvolt was seen as Europe’s best hope against increasing domination by Asian companies on battery production, until it filed for bankruptcy.
It had struggled to increase production amid a global dip in demand for electric vehicles.
Sara Hermansson, head of Scania Power Solutions, said: “Northvolt Systems Industrial Division brings valuable expertise in battery technology and assembly.
“Their capabilities strengthen our modular approach and support the development of complete electrified solutions for off-road applications. I’m pleased to welcome the team to Scania.”
Jonas Hernlund, head of energy and infrastructure at Scania Ventures and New Business, added: “By combining Northvolt Systems Industrial Division’s battery expertise with Scania’s deep industry knowledge, we are not only driving innovation but also strengthening our ability to serve our customers in their transition journeys.”
