Nagel-Group is adding 20 new battery-electric trucks to its German fleet in 2025, including six Volvo FH Aero Electric units and 14 Mercedes-Benz eActros 600s. The vehicles will be used for food transport across regional and long-distance routes.
The rollout is taking place in stages: the first trucks entered service in March, with further deliveries expected in the second quarter and at the end of the year.
The Volvo FH Aero Electric trucks, each with a range of over 300 kilometres, are being stationed at the Bochum, Borgholzhausen and Hamburg depots. Designed for regional distribution, they’re expected to clock up around 150,000 kilometres annually.
Meanwhile, the 14 Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 trucks, offering up to 500 kilometres on a single charge, will be deployed across five sites: Bochum, Borgholzhausen, Hamburg, Gotha and Groß-Gerau.
To keep the fleet moving, Nagel-Group has installed 12 fast-charging points at four of its locations. These high-power chargers, rated up to 400kW, are paired with rooftop solar panels and a smart energy management system. At its Bochum site, the company operates what it describes as the largest rooftop photovoltaic array in the Ruhr region. A large battery storage system is also set to come online there in 2025, supporting both truck charging and the site’s cooling operations.
Nagel-Group has been running electric trucks since 2022. This latest investment builds on that experience, as the company looks to increase the share of low-emission vehicles in its fleet. “In introducing the new vehicles, we aim to integrate more e-trucks into our transport network to start replacing conventional diesel vehicles,” said Carsten Taucke, chief executive.
According to feedback from drivers, the switch to battery-electric trucks is also making a difference behind the wheel. “It is a completely new experience to drive an electric truck – quiet, powerful and more relaxed,” said Stefan Mörchel, fleet manager at the Bochum site.
