Welcome Break said it was spending £1.7m to upgrade its HGV parks, including fitting modern shower blocks, security fencing and infrared CCTV systems.

It said National Highways was also matching its contribution and represented its commitment to supporting the 440,000 lorry drivers parking overnight and the six million truckers that visit its sites every year.

The money will be invested in robust, three-metre high palisade security fencing, enhanced lighting with LED floodlights and the deployment of advanced PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) and infrared bi-optic CCTV systems that are remotely monitored.

In addition, Welcome Break said it would introduce outdoor gyms at five of its sites in 2025, to help HGV drivers stay physically active during their rest periods and promote physical and mental well-being.

The partnership between Welcome Break and National Highways originated from the government’s designated funds project, announced in 2022.

This allocated a £20m matched funding pot to improve infrastructure and support the HGV sector.

Nick Jackson, head of commercial income at Welcome Break, said: “We are incredibly grateful for the funding from National Highways, which has enabled us to make significant improvements to our HGV driver facilities across our locations.

“This investment has allowed us to upgrade key amenities, including modern shower blocks, enhanced security with fencing and CCTV, improved lighting and even the introduction of outdoor gyms.

“These improvements have not only created a safer and more comfortable environment for our drivers but also contributed to their overall well-being and job satisfaction.”
