Supermarket chain Morrisons is to outsource a sizeable slice of its transport operation, alongside several vehicle maintenance departments to Wincanton. A spokesman told motortransport.co.uk: “We are transferring our transport departments at three sites and vehicle maintenance departments at five sites to be operated by logistics specialists Wincanton, who will provide this service for us. ”No jobs will be affected.” Wincanton’s five-year contract will see it manage transport planning and operations for goods travelling to Morrisons stores from three northern DCs. Wincanton hasn’t had it all its own way of late. A resurgent Eddie Stobart wrestled a Cemex contract valued at £15m off it, and MT revealed earlier this month that Britvic had re-awarded its entire transport requirement to Eddie Stobart after the first year of a five-year deal with Wincanton.
Union GMB is calling on 600 workers at XPO Logistics’ Eurocentral and Bellshill depots to strike in a move which could threaten supplies to 60 Morrisons stores in the run up to Christmas.
