XPO Logistics is processing e-commerce orders more than 10% faster after installing barcode scanners with machine vision in some of its UK warehouses.
The scanners have been installed in high-volume e-commerce warehouses to help manage the continued surge in e-commerce orders driven by the pandemic and the peak season.
The fixed-mount, computerised scanners speed-up the reading of inventory data and are more hygienic than shared, hand-held scanners.
XPO selected the Cognex Series 370 technology following pilot programs with major retail customers such as H&M. XPO is also carrying out additional trials with other customers.
Richard Cawston, MD of XPO Logistics supply chain in Europe, said: “We’re constantly exploring new technologies that can enhance the efficiency and safety of our logistics network. Each time we replace a handheld scanner with a fixed-mount camera, we increase throughput by over 10% on average, and the task transfers from person to person touch-free.”
