The leaders of the three main political parties have been urged to address roadside facilities, haulage skills investment and better collaboration with the sector, by the RHA.
Ahead of the General Election, the business group wrote to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, as well as Labour and Liberal Democrat leaders Keir Starmer and Ed Davey, repeating its call for better and more secure services.
RHA MD Richard Smith said: “One thing for decision makers to keep in mind is the fact that almost everything we eat, drink, wear and consume depends on the services provided by our sector and the businesses and drivers that keep people and the supply chain moving.
“Quite simply, our industry is a major employer nationwide – and a key economic enabler.
“The productivity and competitiveness of the British economy needs a skilled and efficient road transport and haulage sector; with the infrastructure in place to support it.”
Smith said the letter outlined the current challenges facing operators, which also include skills shortages and rising cost pressures and members were keen to understand each party’s plans for their sector.
“In our letter in which we’ve repeated our key asks in this election, we’ve stated that we look forward to receiving a response which we can share with our members,” Smith added.
The General Election is on Thursday 4 July.
