Scunthorpe-based Intake Transport, which offers general haulage, heavy haulage and warehousing, has filed notice of its intention to appoint an administrator, in an attempt to save the business from liquidation.

The family-led company, which specialises in hauling fabricated steel and carries the strapline Built On Steel on its fleet of over 50 trucks and 100 trailers, was established almost thirty years ago in January 1995.

Led by brothers and co-directors John and Richard Burgin, Intake Transport has its headquarters in Scunthorpe, South Humberside and also has depots in Sheffield, West Lothian and in South Wales.

Intake Transport is FORS Silver accredited and has worked on a number of major projects over the years, delivering fabricated steel to the Edinburgh airport expansion project, to the new Hearts of Midlothian FC stadium in Motherwell, and to the Gravesend railway station refurbishment scheme.

The firm’s fleet includes low loaders and step frame and rear steer trailers, with 56 tonne and 90 tonne payload capacity,

Intake Transport’s fortunes are closely wedded to the UK steel industry which is facing significant challenges. In June 2024, British Steel applied for a £600m government support package to help cover the cost of switching from blast furnaces to electric arc furnaces at the company’s steel plants in Scunthorpe and Teesside.

The Labour government has pledged to increase steel capacity in the UK with a £2.5bn investment which it has said will be used to rebuild the UK’s steel industry. It has said it will set out its plans to increase steel capacity in the UK in Spring 2025.

When MT contacted Intake Transport today (21 October) it was told there was no one available on site to comment.
