Dr Martin Read CBE has been appointed chairman of Wincanton with effect from 1 August.
Read is currently chairman of two government owned companies - the Low Carbon Contracts Company and the Electricity Settlements Company - as well as the Remuneration Consultants Group and the UK Government Senior Salaries Review Body. In taking the Wincanton role he will step down from the franchise board of Lloyd’s of London after nine years.
Formerly chief executive of international IT services company, Logica, Read spent the first seven years of his career in container transport.
Interim chairman Stewart Oades - formerly president of the FTA and chief executive of Christian Salvesen - said: “I am delighted to welcome Martin to our board as chairman. We have conducted a thorough, independent, external selection process and it was evident that Martin was the best candidate to become our next chairman. Martin’s significant experience and knowledge are a tremendous asset for Wincanton, and I look forward to working closely with him as the group moves forward.”
Oades has held the role of interim chairman since September 2017, and will now resume his former role as senior independent director of the board of Wincanton, which he temporarily vacated during the completion of the selection process for a permanent chairman.
