Halifax heavy haulage specialist Collett & Sons has delivered 90 wind turbine components, including nine record-breaking 80-metre long blades to Cushaling Wind Farm in Ireland, using its “game-changing” blade adapter trailers.
This milestone project saw Collett and Sons deliver nine nacelles, nine hubs, nine power trains, 36 tower sections and 27 blades, which included the 80-metre long blades - the longest onshore turbine blades ever delivered in the history of Ireland and the UK.
This was the first time the Blade Adapter trailer had been used in the UK and Ireland. Developed by trailer manufacturer DOLL, it was designed to provide improved ground clearance, enhanced manoeuvrability and greater stability, compared to standard Super Wing Carrier trailers.
All components, except the blades, were transported directly from the port of Waterford to site, following a 295km route which was undertaken at night to minimise road traffic disruption.
The journey took around 10 hours, including a rest break. Due to the blades’ length, and the distance and complexity of the route, a different route was used for these and the journey was spread over two nights.
En-route to the wind farm, Collett’s drivers had to perform several complex manoeuvres, including two three point turns.
Jack Collett, Collett & Sons renewables director, said: “Cushaling was an extremely challenging and technically difficult project, especially managing this size of blades in nighttime delivery conditions.
“However, we’ve come through the other side and delivered the project successfully which is a tremendous achievement. Our Blade Adapter trailers have been a game-changer in allowing us to transport the longest onshore blades to date on land across Ireland and the UK.
“We’re so proud of our team who are a makeup of individuals that work extremely hard and dedicated to providing a quality service for our customers.
“I’d also like to extend our gratitude to our partners at ELS for their assistance with permits & pilots for each movement and for their management of the Garda escorts, as well as to Celtic Shipping and the Port of Waterford for their assistance with handling the cargo over the quay.”
Collett & Sons has also announced the opening of its new office at its Bradford depot.
The new office is the latest addition to Collett’s facilities, making it the fourth office, alongside Collett’s head office at Halifax, heavy lift office in Goole and Scottish hub in Grangemouth.
Jack Collett said: “We’re thrilled to officially open our new Bradford office. Over the past year, both our Renewables and Transport Consulting teams have grown significantly and this move is a reflection of that progress.
“This new space gives us the resources and room to continue growing and to better serve our clients. A big thank you to all our suppliers who helped create such a fantastic workspace. We’re excited about what the future holds, especially as we head into the new year.”
