A new podcast series from our sister brand Freight Carbon Zero examines the practical challenges facing the decarbonisation of UK road freight.

The opening episode of Zeroed In: Freight’s Carbon Challenge features Freight Carbon Zero’s Andy Salter in conversation with Jonny Williams of Vigo Bioenergy, looking ahead to 2026 and reflecting on the key themes from last year’s Motor Transport Decarbonisation Summit.

The discussion highlights the need for a pragmatic, technology-neutral approach to decarbonisation, with Williams arguing that renewable gas and biomethane are already delivering meaningful carbon reductions at scale, alongside longer-term electrification ambitions

Vigo Bioenergy now operates around 60 refuelling stations across Europe and plans to expand its network to between 80 and 100 sites over the next two to three years, supporting fleets operating gas-powered HGVs that in many cases are matching diesel performance

The episode also questions whether current policy frameworks fully reflect operational reality, particularly for vehicle types that are difficult to electrify. Williams stresses the importance of involving OEMs and haulage operators more closely in policy development to ensure decarbonisation pathways are deliverable in practice

Other topics include the role of biomethane under the (RTFO) Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation, the use of mass balancing to support fuel traceability, and lessons that could be learned from overseas markets, including China’s large-scale truck refuelling and battery-swapping models

Zeroed In aims to provide an industry-led forum focused on what fleets can deploy now, as well as the longer-term transition to lower-carbon road freight.
