Menzies Distribution is looking increasingly towards the parcels market as it looks to diversify the business to offset falling revenues from its core newspaper distribution business. Hermes has invested in 100 new vehicles as part of a fleet replacement programme, which will also assist it with additional parcel volumes. The parcels firm has made a multi-million pound investment in 86 vans, a mix of 7.5-tonne, 12-tonne and 18-tonne vehicles, which will be used for radial depot work. Gist blamed one-off pension costs and retailers’ squeezing of supply chain providers for a 23% fall in pre-tax profit last year, but it still saw turnover rise by 7.2%. For the year ended 31 December 2011 pre-tax profit fell to just under £18.8m, from £24.5m the previous year. However, turnover rose 7.2% year-on-year from £379m to £406m.
