Morrisons is to expand its DC in Bridgwater to support the expansion of its convenience stores in the south west and south Wales.

The supermarket plans to extend its DHL-operated Willow Green regional distribution centre  by 95,000ft². It will modify an existing building, located close to the site, to increase the size of its fresh produce operation.

Once operational, the DC will be capable of delivering to 100 ‘M Local’ convenience stores, as well as support its convenience store operation in Feltham.

John Passman, head of multi-channel distribution and infrastructure, said:  “We already have picking and distribution expertise at Bridgwater, and it makes commercial sense to leverage that expertise to support the growth of our convenience business in the region.”

Morrisons expects to create up to 50 jobs at the site.

Earlier this month the supermarket made its first home deliveries in north London following a trial in Ruislip. The operation currently covers a 1,297km² area of London  and comes after the introduction of similar home delivery networks in the Midlands.
