Costs associated with the opening of a new cold store last October at Boroughbridge, Yorkshire-based food logistics specialist Reed Boardall Group had a significant effect on the firm’s pre-tax profit for the year, it has emerged. A property revaluation was responsible for scuppering the bottom line at Bradford-based Expect Distribution in the year to the end of November 2012. It was enough to turn the previous year’s profit before tax of £432,500 into a loss of more than £943,700, despite a 14% rise in turnover from £15.8m to £18.1m.
A continued move from straight transport to logistics activities including warehousing, packing and freight forwarding helped Glasgow-based Gordon Leslie Group achieve a 20% rise in pre-tax profit in the year to 30 September 2012. Some haulage contractors should be charging over four times the rate they are currently being paid, a prominent costs expert has warned.
