The RHA said plans to build a Universal theme park and resort in Bedfordshire represented a significant opportunity for jobs, economic growth and infrastructure development in the region.
“Our industry will play a key role in this,” RHA MD Richard Smith said, “including delivering the materials needed over the next six years during the construction phase.”
The government officially announced the multi-billion-pound deal today (9 April) - whilst pledging infrastructure investment to improve transport links and access to the new resort.
Universal says the attraction will create 28,000 jobs - 20,000 over the next six years during construction and 8,000 permanent roles in hospitality and tourism once it opens its doors in 2031.
“The road freight and logistics sector will be essential to supporting this and other large-scale projects and we’re committed to working in collaboration with government and trusted partners to boost growth,” Smith added. “To do so, we must see roads and facilities in place fit for a modern economy, and a focus on attracting, training, and retaining the next generation of drivers and technicians to deliver such projects. Initiatives such as skills bootcamps will be key to meeting this demand.
“The Universal Theme Park and Resort will also be a major boost to the tourism sector and will undoubtedly become a major travel hub. The Coach sector will play a massive role in connecting communities and supporting the economy in the years ahead.
“We look forward to working with both government and industry to ensure that this exciting new venture delivers lasting benefits for all.”
