The number of trailers operated by companies in the MT Fleet Data has increased over the past six months, rising by 0.5% to 244,767.
However, analysis of the O-licence data shows that the figure for fleets of more than 1,000 trailers has actually declined by 0.7%.
There are 33 operators in the MT Fleet database with fleets of this size, accounting for 116,372 units. However, their share of the market has declined from 48.1% to 47.5% over the past six months.
The biggest growth has come at Evri, which has expanded its trailer fleet by almost 32%, largely driven by its takeover of DHL eCommerce. The takeover is also reflected in the figure for DHL, which has seen a 10% decline.
Other big winners are DX Network Services whose trailer fleet has grown 4.1%, and XPO (3.5%). Royal Mail has expanded its trailer fleet by 4%, but at the same time it has cut back its truck fleet by 1.4% to 6,515 which suggests that it has been moving towards operating fewer larger vehicles.
Other operators that have seen significant growth in their trailer fleets include Menzies Distribution Solutions, Turners (Soham), Gregory Group, Maritime Transport and BCA Automotive.
Many operators have very stable trailer fleets. Retailers such as Asda, Aldi and the Co-op have seen no change at all over the past six months. The same can be said of third party logistics providers such as Kinaxia, Ceva, WH Malcolm and DFDS.
Companies that have cut back their trailer fleets include GXO, Gist, B&M Retail, UPS and Culina.
Fleet Data is Motor Transport’s listing of the UK’s largest third party and own account HGV fleet operators. Based on the weekly O-licence updates issued by the Office of the Traffic Commissioners, Fleet Data enables subscribers quickly to identify operators in each of the eight traffic areas based on the number of vehicles on the licence and type of operator.
