North Yorkshire heavy haulage firm GCS Johnson has closed its doors after 57 years of trading.
The family-led firm, which was based in Richmond, was founded in 1969. It specialised in the movement of heavy and abnormal loads and had an operating licence for 30 trucks and 60 trailers. The company employed around 37 staff.
Whilst it has made no public announcement of its closure, on Google’s business directory, GCS Johnson and its sister business Barton Commercial Tyres, are stated as being “permanently closed”.
However the company’s website states that a new website is “coming soon”.
When MT contacted the company an employee confirmed the company had closed down. However MT was told the directors were “not available” for comment.
In May 2023 GCS Johnson pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety regulations, following the death of Anthony Clark from Darlington in August 2018, at the company’s site at Barton Quarry industrial estate in Richmond.
Clark was helping to move a large piece of machinery from one trailer to another when it fell on him, killing him instantly.
GCS Johnson was fined £140,000 and ordered to pay £18,355 in court costs.
