The Health & Safety Laboratory (HSL) has published a guide for operators about safe loading and securing in an effort to reduce the 1,200 injuries caused each year.
It says many of the deaths and injuries that arise from load shifts are preventable and that its guide provides simple, straightforward advice explaining why goods move during transit and what you can do to prevent it, as well as providing examples of ways to secure different types of load.
The HSL guide also sets out what your legal responsibilities are and what you can do to make sure you're complying with them.
Earlier in the summer Vosa said it was clamping down on unsafe loads by launching a new training scheme for its officers carrying out roadside checks.
It says enforcement action will be taken where there is clear danger.
Details on how to order the guide can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/7pgzjxc and see MT 3 September issue for more on load security.
