BCA Automotive is the trading name of Walon. It has most recently reported for the nine-months ending 30 November 2014 during which it was part of Eddie Stobart Logistics. It was acquired by BCA Marketplace on 28 August 2015 and BCA said in June that from the point of acquisition to the close of its financial year on 3 April 2016 the division achieved a turnover of £44.3m and an adjusted EBITDA of £2.1m – but provided no comparative data from the same period in the previous year. As a result we have chosen to use the most recent filings at Companies House.

Boughey Distribution has not updated its results since the Top 100 was published in 2015.

Culina Logistics has most recently reported for the year-ending December 2015. In March 2016 it acquired Great Bear Distribution. As they are not yet shared legal entities reporting for the same trading periods, the performance of both has been kept separate.

DHL’s turnover and pre-tax profit figures are derived from DHL Supply Chain; Exel UK; DHL International UK (which trades as DHL Express) and Tradeteam. Its employee figures are derived from DHL Services, a separate business which supplies staff to DHL Supply Chain, as well as DHL International UK and Tradeteam. Where we to list DHL Express as a separate business it would be the seventh largest operator in the UK, with a turnover of £711.1m and a pre-tax profit of £15.7m. Tradeteam would be the 31th largest operator with a turnover of £118m and a pre-tax profit of £2.7m. Supply Chain (incorporating Exel UK) would still be the second largest domestic operator in the UK with a turnover of £4.13bn and a pre-tax profit of £108.6m. We have excluded DHL Global Forwarding.

FedEx and TNT UK are not yet shared legal entities reporting for the same trading periods so, for now, the performance of both has been kept separate. The deal was completed in May 2016.

Goldstar Transport: see Turners (Soham).

Great Bear Distribution: see Culina Logistics.

Kuehne + Nagel’s turnover is derived from its contract logistics business (as reported by Kuehne + Nagel Ltd) and Kuehne + Nagel Drinks Logistics. Turnover from its International Freight Forwarding business (£819m in 2015) has been excluded to best reflect the domestic road freight related contributions to the business – much in the same way that turnover contributions from similar business lines at XPO Logistics and DHL have been excluded. However, as K+N does not split the two divisions into separate legal entities, we have been unable to breakdown pre-tax profit and employee numbers in the same way. Therefore, and unfortunately, the profit contributions and employee figures include its international freight forwarding business. Were we to list K+N Contract Logistics as a separate business it would have a turnover of £389m and rank 14th on our list. K+N Drinks Logistics had a turnover of £212.2m in 2015 and would rank22nd on the list.

Lenham comprises of Lenham Storage and Lenham Storage (Southern).

Macintyre Transport: see Turners (Soham).

NR Evans & Son was acquired by NFT Distribution on 19 July 2016. NR Evans closed its most recent financial year on 31 August 2015, while NFT Distribution closed its most recent financial year on 31 March 2015. As the two are not yet shared legal entities reporting for the same trading periods the performance of both has been kept separate.

Pentalver comprises of Pentalver Transport and Pentalver (Cannock).

Potter Group has not updated its results since the Top 100 was published in 2015. On 26 October 2016 its transport and warehousing operations were acquired by W H Bowker.

Suttons comprises of Sutton and Son (St Helens) and Suttons Tankers (formerly Imperial Tankers) in order to best reflect the domestic road freight related contributions to the business. It does not include its Suttons International division, which had a £94m turnover and £6.6m pre-tax profit.

TNT UK and FedEx are not yet shared legal entities reporting for the same trading periods so, for now, the performance of both has been kept separate. The deal was completed in May 2016.

Tuffnells Parcels Express has changed its financial year to be inline with owners Connect Group. The figures in the Top 100 reflect an eight month period ending 31 August 2015. On a pro-rata basis turnover of £112.1m is up on £95.4m in the corresponding eight month period in 2014.

Turners (Soham) reported its financial performance for the 12 months ending 3 January 2016. On 13 January it acquired Macintyre Transport, while on 5 September it announced its intention to buy Goldstar Transport. As all are not yet shared legal entities reporting for the same trading periods, for now, the performance of all parties has been kept separate.

UK Mail reported its performance for the year-ending 31 March 2016. That was before DHL Deutsche Post made its bid to acquire the firm. As they are not yet shared legal entities reporting for the same trading periods, for now, the performance of both has been kept separate.

XPO Logistics is comprised of XPO Supply Chain UK (formerly Norbert Dentressangle Logistics); XPO Bulk UK (formerly ND Tankers) and XPO Transport Solutions UK (formerly ND Transport Services). We have excluded XPO Global Forwarding and XPO Maintenance UK to best reflect turnover and profit derived from domestic road freight.

Yodel Distribution includes subsidiaries Arrow XL and Arrow XL (Scotland). Were Arrow XL to be a separate business it would have a turnover of £88.3m and a pre-tax profit of £1.2m ranking 43rd in the Top 100.
