John Mitchell (Grangemouth)’s investment in the next generation is coming to fruition after it recruited five new members to spearhead the business in the coming years.

The creation of the Scottish haulier’s “Young Team” paves the way for generational change according to its MD, and for a seamless transition when the current management makes way for a new crop of directors.

MD Iain Mitchell said the team is made up of Ross Mitchell, transport manager; Sandy McGiven, operations manager; Tracey Birkett, finance coordinator; Angela Martin, administration and compliance coordinator and Lynsey Mitchell, administration and compliance assistant.

He said: “The five members of the ‘Young Team’ have now got the knowledge to run the business, although like us all they still have lots more to learn.

“Hopefully things will keep improving year on year as they gain more knowledge.

“It is seriously encouraging to see the young team progressing. We took a gamble and started early with the transition which has cost a lot of money in training, professional advisors and at times double salaries, but there is no doubt it is paying off.”

Mitchell added: “These people are leading their areas but they are well supported by others in the business as well.

“I believe they have created a great culture to take the business forward.”

Mitchell’s comments came as the business reported a £3.2m increase in turnover to £17.1m for the year ending 31 March 2019.

Pre-tax profit also increased to £1.4m from £273,758 in the previous period.

Mitchell said: “The growth in turnover has come mainly from our warehousing activities, which were mainly driven by Brexit activities in the second half of our financial year and obviously the bottom line has followed accordingly.”

Last year, Mitchell said the company was making a significant investment into ensuring the business was in a good shape for when he and a fellow director retired in the next few years.
