Nearly three-quarters (70.4%) of operators struggle to fill their HGV driver vacancies some or all of the time, according to new research just published by motortransport.co.uk.

Meanwhile, more than half (51.6%) of operators do not think Driver CPC has added any value to their business since its introduction to the UK 10 years ago.

However nearly one-quarter of operators (23.5%) do feel it has made their drivers safer on the road and a further one-fifth felt Driver CPC had provided employees with new skills.

The results were revealed in a brand-new report – the ‘Fraikin Fleet Management Operator Survey 2019’ - compiled by Motor Transport and sister title Commercial Motor.

Research was carried out to explore the key trends and challenges in managing a commercial vehicle fleet in today’s operating environment.

The top stress factor for businesses was cited as management of the driver workforce, with nearly two-thirds (64%) agreeing this was a challenge.

This insightful research asks operators of all sizes how they rate key driver issues such as recruitment, reliance on agency workers and calibre of training providers.

It also probes into industry trends in a range of other fleet management topics, such as compliance, telematics and connected vehicle technology, emissions reduction and vehicle utilisation.

“Fraikin’s aim with this report was to develop a deeper understanding of how fleets are reacting to some of the key issues in our sector,” said James Walker, commercial director, Fraikin.

“We pride ourselves on being far more than simply a vehicle supplier and know how important it is to stay ahead of the curve and to truly understand what is driving change in our industry.”
