Amazon has begun offering a chilled and ambient grocery delivery service in London, with the introduction of its Amazon Fresh service.

The service, which is currently available to 69 postcode areas in central and east London, allows Amazon Prime customers to choose from more than 130,000 refrigerated and ambient food products and household goods.

The service offers same-day delivery from 5pm, if an order is placed before 1pm, and customers can choose from one-hour delivery slots between 7am and 11pm seven days a week.

A spokesman for Amazon told Motortransport.co.uk that deliveries will be “carried out by third-party delivery companies via Amazon Logistics”.

The news follows the retailer’s introduction of Amazon Pantry to the UK last year, which allows customers to buy non-perishable goods by the box.

Amazon Fresh vice-president Ajay Kavan, said that the e-retailer knew that “the bar in grocery retailing is exceptionally high”.

He added: “The supermarkets and grocers are among the best retailers in the world. We will take our time with to hone and improve our service based on our learnings and feedback. We will be very methodical about how we roll this service out.”

As well as stocking established brands, Amazon Fresh will also carry product lines from independent stores in locations such as Borough Market and Notting Hill.

The service is only available to Amazon Prime customers, who will also have to pay an additional monthly fee of £6.99 to use it.
