Menzies Distribution has bought Scottish parcels carrier Oban Express to boost its service offering in remote locations. Oban Express operates depots in Oban and Glasgow, and runs 45 vehicles compared with Menzies’ 240-strong fleet. Hermes has opened its 1,000th parcel shop, five months after the service was launched. The firm plans to expand the network to 2,500 sites by the end of 2013, following the opening of the milestone ParcelShop in Stockport. Royal Mail is opening eight temporary sorting centres to handle the expected rise in parcel volumes this Christmas. The centres will be dedicated to sorting a ‘significant proportion’ of the parcels handled by the firm before they are distributed to regional depots across the country. Temporary operations will be phased in across the peak period and will open in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Swansea, Bolton, Tamworth, Peterborough, Swindon and Greenford, west London.
