Aldi 2

Supermarket Aldi has been given the green light to develop an RDC on the outskirts of Cardiff, plans for which were revived earlier this year.

It has been granted permission for the 490,000ft² development on the Capital Business Park in Wentloog, near Cardiff, by the local authority. It first received permission in 2004, but did not develop the DC.

The site is expected to serve between 110 and 130 supermarkets and will also be used as a regional head office.

Proposals include a 128,000ft² warehouse for chilled and frozen goods, a 322,000ft² ambient warehouse, along with parking for 70 HGVs, a maintenance bay and truck wash.

A spokesman for Aldi said: “We are delighted that Cardiff Council has approved our plans to open a new regional distribution centre. We are working closely with the local authority to invest in the area and create around 400 new jobs.”

He was unable to disclose when the company expects the DC to be operational.
