Hargreaves Logistics, in partnership with SITA UK, has won a two-year contract to transport household waste with Durham County Council.
To service the work, which begins on 1 June, the company has financed eight new STAS moving floor trailers through Steadplan, the UK agent for the Belgian trailer manufacturer, worth £400,000.
Andy Spence-Wolrich, MD of Hargreaves Logistics, said the new work requires new trailers with the existing fleet of trucks and sub-contractors doing the work. “It is a good sized contract, and we are pleased to be working with both SITA and Durham County Council,” he said.
The work involves taking household waste, like bags, mattresses and furniture, from transfer stations to incinerators, energy-for-waste stations and landfill.
The 95m³ trailers will operate over eight years with a mid-life refurbishment. “We will turn the 10mm moving floor planks after two years because they tend to wear more at the back of the trailer, then replacement them altogether at four years,” he explained.
Hargreaves Logistics are also in the process of tendering for 37 new moving floor trailers to replace existing rolling stock, and ordered 37 new 6x2 Euro-5 tractor units from Scania before Christmas that fill filter through from June 2013.
SITA UK announced in February that it won an eight-year £113m contract to management 140,000 tonnes of residual household waste by Durham County Council, who previous used its in-house company Premier Waste Management to do the work, before taking the decision to wind it down.
