Ian Wainwright, TfL head of freight and fleet

9) Ian Wainwright, head of freight and fleet delivery, TfL

With 18 years logistics industry experience under his belt, Ian Wainwright understands freight. As road freight programme manager at TfL during the lead up to the London 2012 Games, he bridged the gap between the road transport industry and the public sector and ensured operators could keep moving goods around the Capital during the world’s biggest sporting event.

Now heading up the newly created freight and fleet delivery unit at TfL, Wainwright and his team of 15 are tasked with developing a long-term freight plan for London to cope with the extra 1.25 million people expected in the Capital by 2031. More imminent is the issue of how freight and cyclists can share London’s busy roads, given that Boris Johnson wants to double the number of cyclists in London over the next 10 years. Re-timing deliveries is also a key focus for this year.

With the success of the Olympics London is now viewed as the trail-blazer by other cities, so whatever plans Wainwright puts in place for freight, you can expect other cities to follow suit.
