The RHA has said the publication of a new framework document defining the skills, knowledge and understanding required by new truck drivers, by the DSA is a welcome step in formalising the profession and improving its image.
Jack Semple, director of policy at the RHA, said: “As we have discussed with the DSA, we are keen to see a high standard of training for all new entrants to LGV driving, so that they start in the industry with a clear understanding of the right way to drive trucks and build their experience and future training on a sound base.
"We believe that such training is provided to some drivers already but not to all."
Semple said the industry is under pressure on both margins and public scrutiny, and consistency and high standards of new entrant training will address both issues.
“It will benefit haulage employers and it will help to ensure that our trucks are clearly seen as the best-driven vehicles on the road well into the future.”
Rosemary Thew, DSA chief executive, said: "The publication of these standards will help to ensure that all lorry drivers acquire the right skills, knowledge and attitude to use our roads safely and responsibly, as well as contributing to cutting the human and financial cost of road accidents.
National Driving Standard Category C (lorry) outlines what drivers need to know, understand and be able to do in areas such as:
• preparing a vehicle and its occupants for a journey
• guiding and controlling a vehicle
• using the road in accordance with the Highway Code
• driving safely and responsibly
• reviewing and adjusting driver behaviour over a lifetime.
