Bio-CNG supplier ReFuels has opened a new refuelling station at Livingston in West Lothian, Scotland.

The public-access fuelling station, which will be operated under the CNG Fuels brand, can refuel 14 trucks simultaneously totalling more than 600 trucks per day, the company said. CNG Fuels already operates a public-access renewable biomethane HGV refuelling station off the M8 near Bellshill, which opened in December 2021.

Philip Fjeld, Chief Executive of ReFuels, said, “The Livingston station is strategically located near several major distribution centres, including Tesco, DHL, Aldi and Iceland, and its opening supports fleet operators and their customers in reducing transport emissions across Scotland”. Fjeld added, “As we expand our network in line with our long-term strategy, we continue to see growing demand for Bio-CNG trucks from both new and existing customers.”

CNG Fuels has a UK network of 15 stations that can currently can refuel more than 10,500 HGVs daily. Following a restructuring with Foresight Group finalised in April, it plans to double the refuelling capacity to 20,000 HGVs per day by end-2028, with at least nine new grid-connected stations and 20 added to its current fleet of 10 mobile refuelling stations.

In the restructuring, which was finalised in April, ReFuels combined with funds managed by the Foresight Group to create “a fully integrated clean fuel company”, through ReFuels’ existing wholly owned subsidiary CNG Fuels Ltd.

Around £32m in existing Foresight loans were deemed repaid, and the resulting business has no external interest-bearing debt.

In April Re-Fuels said a new class of 6x2 CNG trucks would “significantly increase the addressable market”, adding 124,000 6x2 trucks to the 21,000 4x2 trucks already served. The company also said there were close to 1000 CNG HGVs “in confirmed order books” to add to the current fleet of 1970 HGVs.

“By consolidating biomethane sourcing, station ownership and certificates, we are creating a leading integrated and fully equity-funded Bio-CNG infrastructure platform. This opens new sources of capital to finance a doubling of our refuelling capacity supported by rapidly increasing cash flow from operations. A larger station portfolio will enable additional truck fleets to decarbonise, further fuelling network and scale effects,” said Fjeld.
