Kettering-based turf grower and distributor Harrowden has acquired Buckinghamshire-based George Davies Turf & Stone (GDT) for an undisclosed sum.
The acquisition brings together two suppliers to the landscaping and horticultural sectors and expands Harrowden’s distribution network, with the combined business employing more than 130 people across seven UK locations and generating annual turnover of almost £20m.
Founded in 2001, George Davies Turf & Stone supplies turf and landscaping materials to more than 3,250 trade customers from depots at Clifton Reynes and St Albans. The company employs 30 staff and supplies around 1.4 million rolls of turf each year.
Harrowden said the deal follows a long-standing commercial relationship between the two businesses, with GDT having sourced turf from Harrowden for a number of years.
George Davies will remain with the business as a member of the senior leadership team for at least the next three years following the acquisition.
Davies said: “After 25 years of building George Davies Turf & Stone, this was one of the biggest decisions I’ve ever had to make. When the opportunity arose, it quickly became clear that it was the right fit for the business, our customers and our team.
“I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved over the last 25 years and excited about what comes next. I’m also delighted to be staying involved and helping shape the next chapter for the business, our customers and our team.”
George Davies Turf & Stone will continue to trade under its existing brand following the acquisition.
Harrowden director Chantall Ridd-Jones said the companies had enjoyed a long-standing relationship and shared similar approaches to customer service and business operations.
