Meachers Global Logistics has won a four-year contract from Southampton City Council’s Corporate Records Management Department to store 300 pallets at its Sustainable Distribution Centre (SDC).
The 20,000ft² consolidation centre, which Meachers won the contract to operate from the city council in January, opened in February to serve customers in Southampton, Winchester, Eastleigh, Hedge End, Totton and the New Forest.
Meachers said the council, which previously used five separate stores across the city, would make savings of over £10,000 a year in reduced overheads and more efficient procedures by using the SDC.
Southampton General Hospital has also started testing out the site, storing a range of non-essential items such as furniture and drip stands in a 1,700ft² area there, said the firm.
The SDC is used to group goods outside busy town centres, consolidate those bound for the same location and deliver them on demand in light goods vehicles, helping to reduce the number of delivery vehicles traveling into such areas and cutting down on the emissions and congestion involved.
