Progress in the use of green hydrogen in the transport industry has been fitful as the industry tries to grow supply and demand simultaneously. Now, shortly after it announced the start-up of its first commercial production site, green hydrogen producer Lhyfe has announced that it has signed an offtake agreement with a service-station operator in Germany for a bus fleet.
With 10MW of installed capacity, Lhyfe Schwäbisch Gmünd is claimed to be Germany’s largest commercial site producing bulk hydrogen from renewable energy (referred to as ‘green’ hydrogen), as well as Lhyfe’s largest such site and its first in Germany. The site was installed at the end of last year and is currently undergoing reliability testing and ramp-up, with commercialisation planned “in the coming months”.
The 10MW electrolysis system will produce 4t of hydrogen per day, which Lhyfe says is enough to fuel 100 trucks for around 400km per day. In September, the company received the EU’s Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) certification.
Lhyfe has already reached agreement to supply regional hydrogen filling stations run by German operator H2 Mobility. Under the new contract, Lhyfe will supply around 90t of RFNBO-certified hydrogen to another service station operator over a 15-month period, to fuel a bus fleet.
Matthieu Guesné, founder and chief executive of Lhyfe: “After the inauguration of our first commercial production site in Schwäbisch Gmünd last week — the largest in Germany — this announcement once again highlights the position Lhyfe has held for several years as a driving force in the development of a local and sustainable industry. More broadly, this contract mainly confirms Germany’s strong momentum in developing green hydrogen, particularly in hydrogen mobility. At Lhyfe, we are convinced of the major role that green hydrogen will have to play in decarbonizing heavy and intensive mobility, which is responsible for a significant share of CO2 emissions.”
