Hydrogen supplier Ulemco and Luxfer Gas Cylinders have forged a strategic collaboration which aims to deliver innovative ways to store hydrogen fuel on HGVs and off-road equipment.

The two companies have previously joined forces on projects including hydrogen-powered trucks, LGVs, road sweepers, a prototype ambulance and a waste collection truck that combined hydrogen with HVO - the first of its kind in the UK.

This latest collaboration aims to deliver innovative, integrated solutions for onboard storage of hydrogen fuel. Currently, onboard hydrogen storage for HGVs primarily relies on high-pressure compressed gas and cryogenic liquid storage. These systems must balance heavy payload demands with the physical space constraints of the HGV chassis as well as on off-road equipment, marine and rail.

The partnership said that the move will position it to meet growing global demand for innovative approaches to onboard energy storage solutions, which it said is increasing, particularly in heavy-duty applications.

Commenting on the agreement, Amanda Lyne, Ulemco MD, said: “This collaboration with Luxfer strengthens our ability to deliver integrated hydrogen solutions at scale.

“By aligning our capabilities, we can provide customers with efficient, safe and proven systems that support the transition to zero-emission transport.”

Keith Croysdale, Luxfer business development manager, added: “We’ve worked with Ulemco for more than a decade, sharing a vision to advance hydrogen-powered transport.

“Formalising our collaboration reflects the growing commercial opportunities we see across hydrogen mobility.

“Together, we are making it easier for customers to deploy safe, proven hydrogen storage solutions in new and emerging transport applications.”
