All students from the latest cohort of the TIP Mechanic Academy have successfully graduated, as the programme continues to build a pipeline of skilled trailer technicians for TIP’s workshop network.

The programme has now trained 40 mechanics since it launched in 2023 and boasts a 100% graduation rate.

Each of this year’s graduates will return to their respective TIP branches across the UK, where they will support the delivery of trailer maintenance and repair services.

TIP said the academy was created in order to fast-track the development of trailer-specific technical skills and offered a focused alternative to broader heavy vehicle training routes.

The nine-month course provides students with the expertise required to work on trailer components, including axles, braking systems, suspension, electrics and superstructures.

The academy combines classroom learning, e-learning and workshop experience, with students assessed through both practical and written examinations.

TIP added that students are employed and paid throughout the course, receiving full employment benefits and a professional toolbox, helping to remove barriers to entry and open up careers to individuals from a wide range of backgrounds.

Each student is supported by a dedicated mentor, helping bridge the gap between structured training and real-world workshop environments.

James Robinson, TIP Mechanic Academy graduate, said: “I’ve been with TIP for over 10 years, mainly in more operations-based roles, so this was a bit of a change for me.

“But I absolutely loved it. The mentors were brilliant and the support throughout was spot on.

“At 46, you don’t always expect to get an opportunity like this to re-train, so it’s been a great experience.

“Now I understand both sides of the business, which puts me in a really strong position moving forward. Next step for me is completing my IRTEC qualification, which I’ve already made a great start on.”

Moreblessing Sithole, TIP Mechanic Academy graduate, said he previously worked in the refurb centre preparing trailers for paint: “When the opportunity came up to join the academy, I applied straight away,” he said.

“The way the programme is structured over the nine months is really effective – I learned far more than I ever expected.

“The trainers were fantastic and they supported me throughout and played a huge part in my development.”
