Sixty-five UK organisations have been awarded ‘Go Ultra Low Company’ status since the initiative launched in May.
The scheme is a joint government and vehicle industry campaign to encourage wider uptake of electric cars and vans and recognises organisations already committed to making the switch.
It is supported by Audi, BMW, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Renault, Toyota, Volkswagen, the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders, and the government’s Office for Low Emission Vehicles.
The 65 companies, a mix of public and private sector organisations, will by 2020 be operating more than 1,000 electric vehicles across the UK.
TfL has been awarded Go Ultra Low Company status and will have 120 electric vehicles in its fleet by 2018, up from 16 today.
Lilli Matson, TfL’s head of strategy and outcome planning, said: “Our fleet of electric vehicles keeps the capital moving by helping to maintain the street network and keep buses on the roads. It is essential that whilst doing this we minimise the impact on the environment.”
Transport minister John Hayes said: “The government is determined to make zero-emission vehicles the best choice for everyone, which is why we have pledged £600m to support uptake of greener vehicles and work towards making nearly every new car and van in the UK zero emission by 2050.”
