Abbey tanker LR

MT Haulier of the Year 2014 Abbey Logistics Group has unveiled what it says is the safest powder tanker on the market.

Built by Feldbinder to Abbey’s specifications, it features a full-scope reversing camera designed for low light usage; ultrasonic reversing sensors linked to an automatic braking system that kicks in around a metre away from any obstruction; and in-cab audio-visual proximity warnings for drivers.

The new design also incorporates a ladder angled at 45 degrees for access to the tank top; a safety harness for drivers that uses an arrestor system to dampen any fall; automatic application of vehicle brakes when the safety handrail is deployed on top of the tank; and a prominent shutdown system at ground level to halt tank discharge in an emergency.

Anti-topple protection prevents tipping tanks from raising unless the stabilising feet are fully seated or extended to the ground, meanwhile, and the tanker vehicles have also been fitted with electronic stability control.

Abbey has already begun running 18 of the new tanker trailers with seven more due by the end of January. A video about the new Abbey tanker has been released too.

Commenting on the new trailers, which have cost around 15% more than regular vehicles, Abbey Logistics Group MD Steve Granite, said: “Safety is a crucial factor in any logistics operation and we believe the introductions we’ve made will become the new industry standard in the future.”

Commercial director Dave Coulson said the trailers, which also feature weigh gauges and a sonic vibration system to settle product and allow maximum volumes to be carried, would “ensure our drivers are safe, our customers are safe, our customers’ customers are safe and the general public are safe”.
