HGV drivers on board a roro ferry that rolled heavily in rough seas en route to Scotland ignored international regulations and stayed in their cabs, putting themselves and rescuers at risk.
The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has thrown its weight behind the recent EU vote to allow truck manufacturers to exceed current maximum weight and dimensions limits. IOSH described the vote in favour as “a major step in the right direction to reduce deaths and major injuries on the road”.
There is to be no mandatory registration and testing scheme for trailers, after a review found human error is a far more common reason for serious incidents.
