The European Commission (EC) believes “substantial remedies are needed” before the proposed takeover of TNT Express by UPS can be cleared. In a merger review speech made on Friday (2 November), Joaquín Almunia, EC vice-president responsible for competition, said that “serious competition concerns would arise” if it went ahead without revisions. Amazon plans to open four more depots under its ‘Amazon Logistics’ business in 2014 to give it more flexibility and capacity.
UPS predicts that tomorrow (20 December) will be its busiest day of the year with an estimated 28 million packages delivered worldwide. The parcels giant expects to deliver over 12 million more packages on its busiest day than its daily worldwide average of 15.8 million parcels.
