Haulier Eddie Stobart Logistics (ESL) has resubmitted controversial plans to build a major DC on Green Belt land opposite its headquarters at Appleton Thorn, near Warrington.

The proposal for the 193,569sq  ft DC was rejected by Warrington Borough Council in November last year after councillors raised concerns about the “unrelenting” flow of traffic the DC would create in the area and the “overwhelming” size of the development.

ESL was also accused of showing "utter contempt" for the local community by failing to consult more widely.

The company was also criticised for failing to show that the economic benefits outweighed the loss of the Green Belt.

Since the council’s decision to reject the application, Eddie Stobart has appealed the decision to the Planning Inspectorate and held a public consultation in February this year.

Last week it resubmitted the application, which now includes additional investment in the local road network.

A spokesman for Eddie Stobart said: “This is a significant milestone for the business as it looks to grow in Warrington, create new job opportunities and invest in the town.”

He added that the DC would bring “at least” 480 jobs to the area and create a £73m investment in the borough, he said.

"We have always said that Eddie Stobart needs to build its new national distribution centre next to its HQ and Training Academy in Warrington," he said.

“We’re pleased that we now have an opportunity to work with the planning authority to deliver this vision, on a site earmarked for employment development in the emerging local plan.”
