Biffa drivers offered inflation-busting pay rise as strikes loom

Biffa has offered its drivers in Wirral an “above-inflation” pay offer as it seeks to avoid strike action among union members.

Around 200 workers on an outsourced refuse contract on Merseyside were due to commence industrial action on 5 December in a row over pay.

The Unite union claimed HGV drivers were paid just £11.95 an hour and they wanted a 15% increase to “reset” their wages and tackle the cost of living crisis.

However, following talks, Biffa said it hoped to resolve the dispute before strikes commenced.

A Biffa spokesman said: “Following a constructive day of negotiations between ACAS and the trade union, we have tabled a revised above-inflation offer.

“We hope to find a resolution to this dispute so that strike action can be avoided.

“A further meeting is planned for Thursday,” the spokesman added.

Unite has warned that industrial action would cause “huge disruption” to Wirral residents.
