Motor Transport has launched a new category for the 34th Motor Transport Awards - Clean Fleet Van Operator of the Year.

The new award sponsored by Renault Trucks is to recognise those van operators that are the early adopters in the drive to decarbonise road freight transport by taking the bold step of investing in low carbon vehicles and refuelling infrastructure.

Just 1% of the 311,000 vans registered in 2019 (source: SMMT) were electric, but these clean vehicles will quickly have to move from trials to mass market if the UK is to achieve its goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The rise and rise of online retail will mean an inexorable increase in van deliveries and with growing numbers of ultra-low and zero emissions zones expected to be introduced in more cities conventional diesel drive trains will have to give way to cleaner alternatives.

This Award is for the operator of a fleet of 11 or more vans under 7.5 tonnes GVW that can demonstrate leadership in adopting low emissions vehicles including battery electric, hydrogen and hybrids.
