Maritime Transport and Roadways Container Logistics

Maritime Group has acquired Aegeus Transport - the holding company for Roadways Container Logistics (RCL) – for an undisclosed sum.

The purchase, in completed on Friday 8 August, sees Felixstowe-based Maritime take on the entire RCL business. This comprises 374 employees, a fleet of 241 vehicles, sites at Hainault, Felixstowe, Leeds, Manchester, Nursling in Southampton, and the company’s Birmingham Intermodal Freight Terminal (BIFT) at Birch Coppice in Tamworth.

“We are very excited to acquire Aegeus and Roadways,” said John Williams, group MD at Maritime. “This is a strategic move and a really excellent fit with Maritime. Altogether the combined business will provide much greater scale, scope and services for customers.”

Latest financial results for both companies, for the year ended December 2012, show Maritime recorded turnover of £130.7m and a pre-tax profit of £3.87m, with RCL reporting turnover of £46.2m and a pre-tax profit of £570,000.

“As a committed market leader, I believe Maritime offers the best long-term future for the business and we look forward to working with Roadways’ customers, suppliers and employees,” added Williams.

In January 2010, Maritime was propelled into the top spot in UK container haulage with its acquisition of DHL Container Logistics.

This latest purchase will see the container giant operate a fleet of more than 1,300 vehicles and operate a UK transport and storage network with railports at Tamworth and Tilbury and depots at all major gateways and consumer conurbations.
