Retailer Marks & Spencer has confirmed that its new DC in Castle Donington in the East Midlands will open this spring.
The 900,000ft² site, which M&S will run itself, will create around 1,000 new jobs over time, said a company spokesman.
The Castle Donington warehouse, which will incorporate an automated storage and retrieval facility, is just the latest development in an ongoing supply chain transformation programme that started in 2008 and will see the retailer move from over 100 very small warehouses to a small number of very large ones, added the spokesman.
It follows the opening of a 1.1 million ft² site in Bradford in 2010.
The new site will act as a national DCfor deliveries to M&S stores, and as an e-commerce facility delivering direct to customers who have ordered online or through stores for home delivery.
It’s not yet clear who will be handling the inbound and outbound logistics at the site.
